  1. BulletA retrospective study of 96 patients treated with posterior fossa decompression for the Chiari malformation. Resolution of symptoms was noted in 78% at a mean follow-up of 3.6 years.

CT venography performed on an 18-month-old child with multisutural craniosynostosis from Crouzon syndrome revealed engorgement of vertebral and paravertebral veins. The study was useful in deciding that the risk of a Chiari decompression was too high.

Skull base growth in children with Chiari malformation Type I.

J Neurosurg. 2007 Sep;107(3 Suppl):188-92.

  1. Bullet This important study measured skull base distances and angles on MRI scans of 30 children with Chiari malformation, with or without syringomyelia. The authors found that the “entire skull base, not only the posterior fossa” was abnormal, a finding that supports a mesodermal defect as the possible etiology of the Chiari malformation.
